Situation:

In 2018, the Puyallup Tribe of Indians (PTOI) fought to halt illegal construction of an unpermitted liquefied natural gas plant on their ancestral homelands; tidelands where they harvest fish.

Strategy:

  • Launch a campaign that tells the Puyallup Tribe of Indians story to the residents, elected officials, and community leaders of Pierce County.
  • Elevate the voices of PTOI tribal leaders, Water Warriors, and other influential Natives about the impacts to the community.
  • Garner support of community leaders across sectors to build a coalition of support for PTOI’s position of sustained community safety, health, and wellness.

Tactics:

As a result, more than 80 stories across the country ran, and the PTOI’s social media surged thanks to an influx of storytelling, infographics, and other content. And by building a coalition of 45 tribal nations and organizations (NGOs), Governor Jay Inslee switched his position, joining then Attorney General Bob Ferguson, in favor of PTOI’s position and protected treaty rights.
